Abstract

Emotional development in early childhood is a crucial aspect that influences children’s ability to recognize, express, and regulate emotions adaptively. Various emotional regulation difficulties observed in early childhood, along with the limited availability of learning media that conceptually and practically integrate Islamic values, indicate the need for the development of instructional media aligned with the characteristics of Islamic Early Childhood Education. This study aims to develop, assess the feasibility, and examine the effectiveness of an Islamic-based illustrated book as a learning medium for emotional regulation in children aged 4–5 years. This study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model. The media development was based on Gross’s emotion regulation framework, which includes situation selection, situation modification, attentional deployment, cognitive change, and response modulation. These components were integrated with Islamic perspectives through values of self-control, inner calm, positive thinking (husnudzan), and proper manners in emotional expression as taught in the Qur’an and Hadith. The research subjects consisted of media experts, content experts, early childhood teachers, and ten children from Group A. The research instruments included validation sheets, practicality questionnaires, and pretest–posttest assessments. The results showed that the illustrated book Ali Learns to Regulate Emotions was highly feasible, with a media validation score of 93% and a material validation score of 96.67%. Teacher practicality assessment reached 92%. Effectiveness testing revealed an increase in the mean score from 50.8% in the pretest to 83% in the posttest. The Wilcoxon test yielded a Z value of –2.807 with a p-value of 0.005, indicating a significant difference before and after the intervention. The average N-Gain score of 0.7340 indicated high effectiveness. Therefore, this study concludes that the developed Islamic-based illustrated book is feasible, practical, and effective in supporting emotional regulation learning in early childhood through an approach that aligns developmental psychology theory with Islamic values.
