Abstract
Individuals with mental disabilities often experience a decline in their ability to perform daily living activities, leading to low independence in meeting basic needs. This condition requires appropriate intervention to restore their social functioning and regain self-reliance. This study aims to determine the implementation of occupational therapy in increasing the independence of Activities of Daily Living (ADL) for individuals with mental disabilities and to identify the supporting and inhibiting factors in the rehabilitation process at the Balai Rehabilitasi Sosial Bina Karya dan Laras Yogyakarta. The research utilizes a descriptive qualitative approach, collecting data through interviews, observation, and documentation. Informants consist of social workers, social attendants, occupational therapists, and individuals with mental disabilities. Data validity was obtained through triangulation of sources and methods. The results show a significant increase in the ADL independence of individuals with mental disabilities. This improvement in independence covers Basic ADL, Instrumental ADL, Vocational ADL, and Non-vocational ADL. The success in increasing ADL independence is inseparable from the role of the Social Worker, who manages the rehabilitation process through a systematic series of intervention stages. The Social Worker intervention stages begin with engagement, intake, contract, assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation, and termination. The supporting factors include the clients' awareness and willingness to change and cooperate, family support that provides motivation for recovery, and the clients' proactiveness and interest in participating in various occupational therapy activities. Meanwhile, the inhibiting factors encompass unstable mental conditions such as symptom relapse or mood disorders, physical conditions and co-morbid illnesses that can impede basic daily activities, and older age and low cognitive ability, which slow down the learning process for ADL skills.
