Abstract

This study describes the growing phenomenon of married by accident (MBA) or premarital pregnancy that occurs in Morowali Regency, Central Sulawesi Province. The main triggers are social change, weak sexual education based on religious values, and a lack of family supervision and communication. The long-term consequences affect not only the MBA couples but also the psychosocial development of their children. This is because premarital pregnancy is often negatively labeled. In addition to the couple and the unborn child, such stigma is also attached to both families. Therefore, this study emphasizes how family communication patterns deal with marriages resulting from premarital pregnancies and how families respond to societal reactions to these marriages. This research employs family communication pattern theory, family communication type theory, stigma theory, and the concept of family communication from an Islamic (Al-Qur’an) perspective. It is a qualitative study using a phenomenological approach that focuses on the lived experiences of informants, both MBA couples and their families. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation, followed by triangulation of sources, space, and time, allowing for data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that the families of MBA couples tend to use a connected communication pattern and the principle of qaulan sadidan (truthful speech) as an effort to maintain confidentiality, reduce conflict, and convey information honestly and respectfully. For example, EF’s family adopted a communication pattern that protected the family’s reputation and emotions through a gradual flow of information, while ED’s family prioritized full honesty, such as direct acknowledgment and moral support. This aligns with Islamic teachings that emphasize honesty and kindness in conveying sensitive information. Moreover, applying the principle of qaulan sadidan proves effective in resolving complex social issues, including premarital pregnancy. Honest, transparent, and empathetic communication can minimize conflict, reduce stigma, and facilitate constructive dialogue among related parties. These principles, grounded in religious values, support the creation of fair solutions and demonstrate that moral and spiritual-based communication plays a vital role in addressing social problems and strengthening family relationships.
