Abstract
The Brahminy Kite (Haliastur indus) is a protected bird species, yet publications related to its behavior are still limited. Animals kept in ex-situ captivity often exhibit behavioral differences compared to those in their natural in-situ habitat. This study aimed to determine the daily behaviors, relative frequency, and duration of Brahminy Kite behaviors in an ex-situ captive environment. The research used the focal animal sampling method for 14 days from 08:00 to 16:00. Two individuals, one male and one female, at Gembira Loka Zoo were observed. The results showed that the daily behaviors of the male Brahminy Kite consisted of resting, investigation, perching vigilance, cleaning the beak and feet, flying, walking, vocalization, feeding, and defecation. Meanwhile, the female’s behaviors consisted of resting, investigation, perching vigilance, cleaning the beak and feet, flying, walking, and feeding. This study concludes that behavioral differences exist in ex-situ captivity. The female Brahminy Kite did not exhibit vocalization or defecation during the observation period. The most frequent behavior for the male during both weekdays and weekends was investigation (27.4% and 26.5%), while for the female it was resting on weekdays (37.9%) and investigation on weekends (35.6%). Feeding was the behavior with the longest duration for both male and female Brahminy Kites on both weekdays and weekends.
