Abstract

The tradition of writing secondary hadith books, especially the arba‘īn genre, is one of the important developments in the transmission and codification of hadith after the primary book period. Among the prominent works are al-Arba‘īn al-Buldāniyyah by al-Silafī and Ibn ‘Asākir, which compile forty hadiths based on the regions visited by the authors. This study aims to analyze the epistemological construction of the two books and assess the validity of the hadiths contained therein through epistemological theory. This study uses a qualitative approach based on a literature review, utilizing primary sources in the form of the two books al-Arba‘īn al-Buldāniyyah and reference works related to the epistemology of hadith. The analysis is conducted comparatively by examining the structure of the compilation, the sources of narration, the methods of hadith collection, and the characteristics of the presentation of each book. The results of the study show that the epistemological construction of the two books is based on scientific rihlah, the selection of forty teachers from forty regions, and the practice of sanad transmission that reflects the breadth of the intellectual network of the 6th century AH. Al-Silafī compiled hadith concisely without providing information on the quality of the hadith, while Ibn 'Asākir provided additional comments to explain the status of some of the hadith. Neither of them took hadiths directly from primary sources, but rather relied on the narrations of their teachers, even though some hadiths can be found in primary sources. Validity analysis shows that both books have strong structural coherence in the hadith science system and correspond with the historical facts of hadith transmission. This study concludes that al-Arba‘īn al-Buldāniyyah by al-Silafī and Ibn ‘Asākir are important works in the secondary hadith tradition, valuable not only as collections of hadith, but also as distinctive epistemological models that combine rihlah, sanad, and scientific construction of their time.
