Abstract

Heck’s macaque (Macaca hecki) is an endemic Indonesian species whose population has declined due to poaching, illegal trade, habitat destruction, and land-use change. Gembira Loka Zoo serves as a rescue and rehabilitation center for wildlife. Monitoring daily behavior is one approach used in conservation efforts. This study aims to observe the behavioral adaptation of Heck’s macaques in the display enclosures at Gembira Loka Zoo. The method employed was focal animal sampling on two adult individuals. Observations were conducted over one month, covering both weekdays and weekends. The results identified various daily behaviors, including standing, sitting, lying down, sleeping, eating, drinking, elimination, climbing, running, hanging, walking, aggression, allogrooming, autogrooming, vocalization, and abnormal behaviors (sexual and aggressive). The highest frequency of daily behavior recorded was walking (122 occurrences). On weekdays, the most frequent relative behavior was walking (34.3%), whereas on weekends, it was sitting (34.3%). The most dominant duration observed was sleeping during weekdays, with a total duration of 204 seconds. In conclusion, the dominant daily behavior of Heck’s macaques is walking on weekdays and sitting on weekends. Sleeping represents the behavior with the longest duration, while abnormal sexual behavior was the least frequently observed.
