Abstract

The advancement of information technology has led to the rapid growth of easily accessible online gambling, which has generated broad social and economic impacts on society. Online gambling not only raises moral and legal issues but also causes serious financial losses that drive individuals and families into poverty. The increasing number of people living in poverty as a result of online gambling presents new challenges in the distribution of religious social assistance, particularly concerning their status as zakat beneficiaries (mustahiq). On the one hand, poverty is a condition that requires social protection and recovery; on the other hand, this form of poverty originates from behavior that is normatively regarded as deviant. This study aims to analyze Masdar Farid Mas’udi’s views on the distribution of zakat to people living in poverty due to online gambling, as well as the pattern of Islamic thought underlying his perspective. This research employs a qualitative method with a philosophical approach to the study of Islamic thought. Data were collected through a literature review of Masdar Farid Mas’udi’s works and supported by interviews as complementary data. The analysis was conducted by examining the concepts of zakat, poverty, and the theory of contextual Islam. The findings indicate that Masdar Farid Mas’udi views zakat as an instrument of social justice aimed at addressing structural inequality and restoring human dignity. According to him, poverty resulting from online gambling cannot be understood merely as the consequence of individual fault, but rather as the impact of an unjust and structured social system. People who fall into poverty due to online gambling remain eligible to receive zakat provided that certain considerations are met, namely: (1) the individuals have genuinely repented; (2) they have regained rational judgment so that the assistance received will not be used for online gambling; or (3) the zakat is distributed in the form of productive zakat. Masdar Farid Mas’udi’s views represent a contextual Islamic approach that repositions zakat as a transformative instrument for social recovery and justice in responding to contemporary forms of structural poverty. His contextual intellectual characteristics include: (1) religious ijtihad that is dynamic and adaptable over time; (2) a strong focus on the objectives of maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah; and (3) responsiveness to digital developments.
