Abstract

Environmental degradation in high-income OIC member countries has become a crucial issue amid rising carbon emissions and economic development efforts. In-depth studies on the factors causing environmental degradation in this region are still needed to determine the right policy direction. This study aims to analyze the influence of population, economic growth, technology, and foreign investment on environmental degradation during the period 2000–2022. Using the Fixed Effect Model (FEM) panel data regression method, it was found that population, economic growth, and foreign investment had a significant positive effect on environmental degradation. Conversely, technology was found to have a significant negative effect. These results prove that these countries are still in the scale effect phase and that the Pollution Haven Hypothesis applies. Although technology plays a role as a mitigation instrument, its impact has not been able to offset the damage caused by other factors driving environmental degradation. The implication is that a policy reorientation is needed through non-extractive economic diversification and an accelerated transition to the use of sustainable energy.
