Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of fostering independence in early childhood and the phenomenon of the success of 4-5 year old children raised by single parents in Mpunda District, Bima City, NTB. Single parents play dual roles in parenting and are often faced with limitations of time, energy, and financial resources. However, the reality on the ground shows that children raised by single parents are able to demonstrate independence in various daily activities. Therefore, this study aims to examine single parenting patterns in fostering independence in 4-5 year old children, the parenting methods used, and the factors that support and hinder the process of developing this independence. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. The research subjects consisted of 11 children raised by single parents and 11 other single parents in Mpunda District, Bima City, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). Data collection techniques included observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results indicate that single parents' parenting patterns in fostering independence in children aged 4-5 years tend to be simple and consistent, democratic parenting. The parenting methods used include verbal methods, role models, and habits, which are consistently applied in the children's daily activities. Supporting factors for fostering independence include parental mental readiness, family and community support, and a warm emotional relationship between parent and child. Inhibiting factors include limited time, economic conditions, and parental physical exhaustion, but these factors do not hinder single parents' success in fostering optimal child independence.
