Abstract
This research was motivated by the increasing cases of juvenile delinquency in Indonesia, such as theft (437 cases in January–February 2025), assault (460 cases), drug abuse (2.29 million students), and student brawls, which are often associated with family disharmony such as broken homes and low self-control due to the incomplete maturation of the adolescent brain. The urgency of this study is to prevent deviant behaviors among adolescents, particularly students, such as brawls, truancy, and unintended teenage pregnancy (13.2% among female adolescents in 2021–2024), in order to develop adaptive adolescent character through strengthening family roles and self-control. This study uses a mixed methods sequential explanatory design, consisting of a quantitative stage (questionnaire survey via Google Forms) followed by a qualitative stage (in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation). The subjects were adolescents aged 15–22 years at SMA Negeri, SMK Swasta, MAN Negeri, and MA Swasta, with a sample of 360 respondents (129 males and 231 females). The results show that family harmony and self-control simultaneously have a significant influence on juvenile delinquency with a contribution of 64.7%. Partially, family harmony contributes 23.5% to the reduction of juvenile delinquency (R Square = 0.235) and has a statistically significant effect (t = 3.657; p = 0.000), while self-control partially contributes 41.2% and also shows a significant effect (t = 8.269; p = 0.000). Based on the variable description, the level of juvenile delinquency is in the moderate category with a mean score of 42 (range 37–46), while family harmony and self-control each have a mean score of 22 and fall within the low–moderate category (range 19–26). Simultaneously, both variables act as protective factors in reducing juvenile delinquency through effective family communication mechanisms and adolescents’ ability to control impulses. This research provides a practical foundation for parents, educators, and mentors to strengthen familial communication and cultivate self-discipline among adolescents. Furthermore, this study bridges the gap between internal factors (self-control) and external factors (family harmony), resulting in more effective preventive recommendations to minimize the risk of deviant behavior. These findings are substantiated by data from 360 respondents across various educational institutions, including SMA, SMK, MA, and MAN.
