Abstract

The issue of independence among blind couples constitutes one of the most crucial challenges amidst the sociological stigma of society, which tends to categorize persons with disabilities as a vulnerable group with high dependency on others. A unique phenomenon can be observed among members of the Indonesian Blind Union (PERTUNI) in Yogyakarta City, where married couples who are both blind are in fact able to manage their households autonomously, meet economic needs, and raise children independently. Therefore, this study aims to describe the process of negotiating family independence among such couples and to examine their relational practices through the perspective of Mubādalah Theory. This research is field-based and descriptive-analytical in nature, employing a normative approach. The theoretical framework applied is the Qirā’ah Mubādalah Theory developed by Faqihuddin Abdul Kodir. Primary data were obtained through in-depth interviews and observations of five blind married couples, all active members of PERTUNI Yogyakarta City, who have sustained family life for more than seven years. All collected data were then qualitatively analyzed using an inductive method. The findings reveal that blind couples within PERTUNI successfully negotiate household independence autonomously through comprehensive strategies, including dual-income economic arrangements, collaborative domestic management, adaptive child-rearing, and the utilization of technology grounded in strong optimism. This is evidenced by their average independence dimension score of 94.284 on the Family Development Index (iBangga). In line with the mubādalah concept, such independence is reinforced by highly egalitarian and partnership-based family relations, where role distribution is carried out flexibly on the pillars of mītsāqan ghalīzhan, zawāj, tarāḍin, mu’āsyarah bil ma’rūf, and the tradition of musyawarah (deliberation). This synergy transforms religious values from mere theoretical doctrine into practical instruments of adaptation, enabling them to overcome physical limitations while preserving family dignity and sovereignty.
