Abstract
Marriage is a sacred event that encompasses not only legal dimensions but also profound cultural and spiritual values deeply rooted in Indonesian society. As a nation of diverse ethnicities and cultures, Indonesia possesses a wealth of customary traditions in wedding ceremonies that have been preserved across generations. One such tradition that continues to thrive is Mapag Pengantin in Megu Gede Village, Weru District, Cirebon Regency. This tradition is a ceremonial welcoming procession of the groom and his family by the bride's family, accompanied by hadrah music, recitation of prayers and salawat, and the placing of jasmine garlands as symbols of acceptance and respect. Nevertheless, the persistence of this tradition amidst modernization raises questions regarding the factors that enable it to survive and continue to be preserved by the community. This study employs a qualitative method with a case study approach. Data were collected through direct observation, in-depth interviews with community leaders, customary elders, and tradition practitioners, as well as field documentation. The data were analyzed descriptively and analytically using Talcott Parsons' Structural Functional theory through the AGIL scheme (Adaptation, Goal Attainment, Integration, and Latency) as a sociological framework, alongside the concept of 'urf in Islamic law as a normative framework. The findings reveal four primary factors influencing the continuity of the Mapag Pengantin tradition: the social-educational factor (Adaptation), whereby the community is able to rationally reinterpret the tradition without abandoning it; the socio-religious factor (Goal Attainment), whereby the tradition serves as a means of realizing a sakinah, mawaddah, wa rahmah family; the socio-cultural factor (Integration), whereby the tradition functions as a social adhesive and Sundanese cultural identity grounded in the philosophy of silih asih, silih asah, silih asuh; and the geographical factor (Latency), whereby the conducive rural environment supports the intergenerational transmission of cultural values. From the perspective of Islamic law, the Mapag Pengantin tradition is categorized as 'urf shahih a custom that does not contradict Islamic teachings and embodies positive values making it worthy of preservation as a cultural heritage and collective identity of the Megu Gede Village, Weru District, Cirebon Regency.
