Abstract

This study attempts to examine the concept of self control in Ibn Miskawaih's ethical system. This study is a qualitative library research, employing a descriptive analytical approach. The primary sources are the books Tahdhib al Akhlaq and al Saadah fi Falsafah al Akhlaq. The background of this study stems from the phenomenon of moral crises such as consumerism, hedonism, and social media pressure that weaken human inner balance. The results show that the concept of self control in Ibn Miskawaih's ethical system covers three main points: first, the harmony of the tripartite soul. Second, moral manifestation in the form of iffah. Third, the functioning of the discerning faculty (tamyiz) as a weighing factor for everything. This study also concludes that there is an ontological relationship between self control and the tripartite structure of the soul (al quwwah al natiqah, al quwwah al ghadabiyyah, and al quwwah al syahwiyyah). This study also attempts to link the concept of self control with contemporary phenomena, such as the culture of hedonism and the phenomenon of Fear of Missing Out (FoMO), by emphasising the strengthening of the role of reason, the habit of moderation, and the instilling of the value of qanaah.
