Abstract
This study seeks to develop a more comprehensive understanding of QS. Al-A'rāf [7]: 204, particularly the terms istami’ and anṣit, which convey imperatives that are often narrowly interpreted as “listen” and “remain silent” in specific situations. Employing Fazlur Rahman’s double movement hermeneutics, the study begins from contemporary phenomena indicating shifts in the reception of qur’anic recitation that appear misaligned with the command conveyed in QS. Al-A'rāf [7]: 204 for instance, the practice of saweran to a qari while qur’anic verses are being recited. This research therefore examines the verse deeply through the double movement apporach, focusing specifically on the two lexical items istami’ and anṣit. It investigates why the command emerged, what socio-historical circumstances the early community faced the occasioned the relevation of this verse, and how the general principles embedded in it can respond to contemporary problems so that the injuction remains relevant today. Methodologically, this qualitative study conducts interpretive analysis using Rahman’s double movement framework. The findings show that, in the first movement, several universal moral priciples can be formulated: the ethics of receiving revelation, dicipline and self control, and the cultivation of a conducive social sapce. These principles are derived through an examination of asbāb al-nuzūl and the socio historical context surrounding the revelation of QS. Al-A'rāf [7]: 204. In the second movement, the principles are contextualized, demonstrating that QS. Al-A'rāf [7]: 204 remains relevant and capable of addressing challenges in contemporary settings. Contemporary issues that shape changing modes of reception of qur’anic recitation are not always manifested merely as noise or audible disturbance, as illustrated by saweran practices directed toward a reciter. Contextualization in this study therefore reconstructs present day froms of receiving of qur’anic recitation so that they become more intentional, directed and structured. Ultimately, all of these formulations aim to ensure that the reception of revelation generates rahmah (mercy) as an indicator of the successful implementation of qur’anic reception ethics across diverse contexts. Thus, contextualizing istami’ dan anṣit is not merely an attempt to adjust the verse to changing times, but rather to ensure that the Qur’an’s function as guidance -one that gives rise to raḥmah (mercy)- continues to operate within contemporary reality.
