Abstract

This research examines the transformation of the Front Pembela Islam (FPI) movement in Surabaya City in 2006-2020 AD. In the implementation of its da'wah, FPI, which was founded in 1998-2020 AD in Jakarta by Habib Rizieq Shihab, has drawn a lot of opposition from various parties. The reason is that the orientation of the da'wah carried out by FPI using the concept of amar ma'rūf nahi munkar often leads to acts of radicalism. In Surabaya City, FPI entered in 2006 AD, led for the first time by Habib Ali, but in 2008 AD, this organization dissolved itself. led by Habib Mahdy bin Idrus al-Habsyi in 2008 AD. Similar to what happened at the center, FPI Surabaya City was initially criticized by various parties because it was considered to have a radical nature in the implementation of its da'wah. This is based on the rampant action of forcibly closing places of immorality and raids carried out by this organization. With the phenomenon of rejection from various layers of society, FPI Surabaya City transformed the orientation of its da'wah movement to the humanism method. Because, in this way they can take the hearts of the people of Surabaya City as an object to be able to accept the method of conveying Islamic law that they provide. This historical research uses a social psychology approach that involves analysis of humanist da'wah theory, community organizations, organizational movement transformation and urban society. The focus of this research is directed at the background form of the establishment of FPI Surabaya City. Factors causing the transformation of the orientation of the Surabaya City FPI movement and the transformation of the Surabaya City FPI movement. The results of this study indicate that FPI Surabaya City in carrying out the orientation of its da'wah movement initially tended to be carried out in radical ways because it prioritized the concept of nahi munkar rather than amar ma'rūf through the connotation of hisbah. Furthermore, FPI Surabaya City transformed the movement from radical to humanist, this was triggered by community resistance regarding their rejection of the way of da'wah carried out by this organization.
