Abstract

This research examines the changes in political attitudes of Cakraningrat IV in strengthening the political identity of West Madura. To strengthen the political identity of West Madura, Cakraningrat IV changed his political attitude towards Amangkurat IV, Pakubuwono II, and the VOC. This was caused by Cakraningrat IV's disappointment with them. Cakraningrat IV openly changed his loyalty to Mataram and declared his allegiance to the VOC. Despite this, in the end Cakraningrat IV also changed his political stance to the VOC. Cakraningrat IV's changing political stance eventually had an impact on the political identity of West Madura. This research is a political history study. With this, the researcher uses a political approach to analyze Cakraningrat IV's changing political attitudes. This research also uses the theory of attitude change, to get an overview of the changing political attitudes of Cakraningrat IV towards the Mataram rulers and the VOC. The method used in this research is the historical method which is divided into four, namely, heuristics (data collection), verification (source criticism), interpretation (interpretation of data), and historiography (historical writing). This research resulted in three important points, namely: First, during his time as ruler in West Madura, Cakraningrat IV made several important policies for his government, such as moving the West Madura palace, strengthening the West Madura military, expanding the territory, and allying with the VOC. Second, Cakraningrat IV changed his political attitude towards Amangkurat IV, Pakubuwono II, and the VOC when he felt that his power in West Madura was being harmed by them. Third, the change in Cakraningrat IV's political attitude had an impact on the political identity of West Madura. After Cakraningrat IV changed his political stance to Amangkurat IV and Pakubuwono II, Cakraningrat IV gained independence from the VOC and West Madura politics was freed from the influence of Mataram. However, Cakraningrat IV then ended his rule in West Madura because he again changed his political stance to the VOC, so that finally West Madura was under VOC rule.
