Abstract

Language plays an important role as a tool for human communication and a reflection of the social dynamics of society. In public spaces, the use of written language is known as the linguistic landscape (LL), which represents the cultural and religious identity of the local community. The tomb of Sunan Bonang is a religious tourism destination in Bumi Wali, Tuban which can be studied through LL studies on the use of landscape signs. The diversity of local multicultural communities allows other language variations to be present, creating inter-language interactions in public spaces. This study aims to analyze language variations, functions, and language classification in the public space of Sunan Bonang’s tomb. This research also seeks to understand whether Arabic stands out as a symbol of religious identity or whether there are other language dynamics that dominate in that place. This study uses a field research method with a qualitative descriptive approach, and uses Spolsky and Cooper’s language variation theory, Landry and Bourhis’s LL function, and Gorter Cenoz’s LL classification. Data was collected through observation and documentation of LL signs in the public space of Sunan Bonang’s tomb. The results of this study indicate that the use of Arabic in the LL of Sunan Bonang’s tomb shows an important role as a symbol of religiosity and Islamic cultural identity, especially through religious texts such as verses of the Qur’an and prayers. Arabic dominates the symbolic function, while the informative function is mostly filled by Indonesian. Written landscape signs using Arabic are bottom-up, with local management by YMSB, showing a non-formal style and a combination of Arabic with other languages.
