Abstract

Biology learning on ecosystem material requires an approach that is able to relate concepts to the real environment in order to increase students’ interest and understanding. However, the learning process that is still dominated by conventional teacher-centered learning often makes students less actively involved in learning activities. This study aims to determine the effect of the Contextual Teaching Learning (CTL) approach based on Outdoor Learning on students’ interest and cognitive learning outcomes in Biology on ecosystem material in Grade X at SMA Negeri 2 Ngaglik. This research is an experimental study with a Quasi Experimental Design and uses a Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The experimental class in this study used the Contextual Teaching Learning (CTL) approach based on Outdoor Learning, while the control class used a Teacher-Centered approach or Direct Instruction. The determination of samples in this study used a purposive sampling technique based on the equality of the number of students and the direction from the Grade X Biology teacher at SMA Negeri 2 Ngaglik. Data collection used a questionnaire sheet instrument to obtain data on students’ interest in learning Biology and test questions to obtain data on Biology learning outcomes. The data were then analyzed using the Mann Whitney U Test data analysis technique to process both students’ learning interest and learning outcomes. Based on the results of the data analysis, the conclusions obtained were: 1) there is an effect of the Contextual Teaching Learning (CTL) approach based on Outdoor Learning on students’ interest in learning Biology, as evidenced by the results of the data analysis which obtained a sig value of 0.004, meaning sig < 0.05. 2) there is an effect of the Contextual Teaching Learning (CTL) approach based on Outdoor Learning on students’ Biology learning outcomes, as evidenced by the results of the data analysis which obtained a sig value of 0.008, meaning sig < 0.05.
