Abstract

This research is motivated by the results of a preliminary study that showed that student motivation and learning outcomes in biology are still relatively low because the learning process tends to be teacher-centered and does not actively involve students. Based on this situation analysis, this study was conducted to improve student motivation and learning outcomes in biology through the application of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model with a Deep Learning approach. This study aims to determine: 1) determine the application of the PBL learning model with a Deep Learning approach could improve the learning motivation of students in class X 6 at SMA N 1 Depok Sleman, 2) determine the application of the PBL learning model with a Deep Learning approach could improve the learning outcomes of students in class X 6 at SMA N 1 Depok Sleman. This research was a Classroom Action Research conducted in two cycles using the Kemmis and Taggart model. Cycle I applied the Direct Instruction model, while Cycle II implemented the PBL model integrated with a Deep Learning approach. The subjects of this study were 36 students of class X 6, focusing on the topic of biogeochemical cycles. The data were collected through students’ motivation questionnaires, posttest sheets, photo documentation, and field notes. The data were analyzed descriptively using qualitative and quantitative approaches, including Cohen’s d effect size analysis. The results showed that the implementation of the PBL model with a Deep Learning approach improved both students’ motivation and biology learning outcomes. The increase in learning motivation was indicated by the percentage of questionnaire results in each cycle, with 76.1% in Cycle I and 86.2% in Cycle II. The improvement in learning outcomes was reflected in the average posttest scores, which increased from 63.51 in Cycle I to 75.96 in Cycle II, resulting in an effect size of 0.88 (large effect) between the two cycles. Therefore, it can be concluded that the implementation of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model with a Deep Learning approach effectively improves students’ motivation and biology learning outcomes in class X 6 at SMA N 1 Depok Sleman.
