Abstract

This research aims to analyse the conflict in preserving Kejawen Islamic customs and its impact on the welfare of the community in Tejosari Hamlet. This research uses a qualitative research method with a case study approach, while data is obtained through observation, interviews and documentation. The research analysis uses Ralf Dahrendorf’s conflict theory as the main theory and James Midgley’s social welfare theory as the supporting theory. The research results show that the preservation of Kejawen Islamic customs takes place within an authority structure that positions traditional leaders and elders as groups that have social legitimacy in maintaining the implementation of customs. Meanwhile, underprivileged families, the younger generation, and migrant residents are in a position where they have to adapt to applicable customary norms and obligations. Differences in interests between groups holding traditional authority and communities facing economic limitations give rise to latent and open conflicts in community life. This conflict encourages people to carry out various adaptation strategies, such as getting into debt, delaying meeting basic needs, living simply, and continuing to follow customs due to social pressure. This condition has an impact on people’s welfare, especially in the aspects of fulfilling basic needs and the ability to manage social problems.
