Abstract

The phenomenon of quarter life crisis is experienced by many students, especially in the final level which is characterized by future anxiety, confusion about the direction of life and uncertainty. Conditions like this are psychosocial pressures and require strategies as a form of self-adjustment for individuals to survive and succeed. This study aims to find out the coping mechanism used by final year Social Welfare Science students in dealing with the quarter life crisis. Using a qualitative approach phenomenological method, this study explores the meaning of informants' subjective experiences. The research subjects were selected based on criteria such as final year students who are or have experienced a quarter life crisis with purposive sampling techniques. Through interviews, data collection techniques were carried out by strengthening the triangulation of sources. The results of the study showed that students used various coping mechanisms, both adaptive and maladaptive, including emotion-focused coping, problem-focused coping, avoidance coping and behavioral coping. Adaptive coping mechanisms are in the form of emotion management, social support, and future planning, while maladaptive coping mechanisms can be seen from withdrawal and avoidance behavior. These findings show that the coping mechanism has an important role to help students in providing understanding and strategies to deal with the quarter life crisis constructively.
