Abstract
This study aimed to examine the effect of deservingness perception on schadenfreude and to investigate the role of participant and target sex in the relationship between these variables The study employed a factorial between-subjects experimental design with two manipulated factors presented through vignettes, namely deservingness conditions (deserving vs. undeserving) and target gender (male vs. female), while participant gender (male vs. female) was included as an attribute factor. The participants were undergraduate students of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta who were independently assigned to one of eight experimental conditions. The manipulation of deservingness perception was conducted using vignettes depicting deserving and undeserving situations experienced by the target. Data were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U test for the manipulation check and three-way ANOVA for hypothesis testing with the assistance of JASP 0.95.4.0 software. The manipulation check results indicated that the vignette successfully manipulated deservingness perception significantly. The findings showed that deservingness perception had a significant effect on schadenfreude with a large effect size, in which participants in the deserving condition reported higher levels of schadenfreude compared to those in the undeserving condition. Furthermore, the interaction between deservingness perception and target sex target sex significantly schadenfreude with a small effect size, whereas participant sex and the three-way interaction showed no significant effects. This study indicates that deservingness perception is the primary factor influencing the emergence of schadenfreude, while the influence of sex tends to be limited. The findings are expected to enrich the literature on schadenfreude and deservingness perception and enhance understanding of individuals’ responses toward others’ misfortunes.
