Abstract

The CNC plasma cutting process is a non-conventional cutting method widely used in the manufacturing industry due to its ability to produce fast and precise cuts. However, dimensional inaccuracies between the cutting results and the intended design were still found during the cutting of Stainless Steel 430 plates at the Industrial Engineering Laboratory of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. These inaccuracies were caused by process parameters that had not yet been optimized. This study employed the Design of Experiment (DOE) approach using the Taguchi method with an L9 orthogonal array consisting of four factors and three levels: cutting speed (1000, 1200, and 1400 mm/min), gas pressure (80, 85, and 90 psi), electric current (25, 30, and 35 A), and nozzle height (1, 1.5, and 2 mm). The experiment consisted of nine trials with two replications for each trial, resulting in a total of eighteen experimental runs. Based on the Signal-to-Noise (S/N) ratio analysis, the optimal parameter combination for achieving the smallest dimensional gap was a cutting speed of 1000 mm/min (1.960 dB), gas pressure of 80 psi (0.839 dB), electric current of 35 A (0.771 dB), and nozzle height of 1 mm (1.001 dB). One-way ANOVA results showed that cutting speed contributed 67.71% and nozzle height 15.34% to dimensional accuracy, while electric current and gas pressure each contributed less than 5%. Confirmation experiments verified the effectiveness of the optimal parameter combination in minimizing dimensional deviations. Therefore, this study provides practical recommendations for improving cutting quality in both industrial applications and educational laboratory activities.
