Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology has changed consumption patterns in society, especially among adolescents who increasingly rely on smartphones. The phenomenon of using ex-international (ex-inter) iPhones in Indonesia shows that many consumers choose illegal products due to their more affordable prices, despite the high legal risks and lack of official warranties. This raises social and ethical issues, as such practices violate principles of justice, disregard state regulations, and weaken the internalization of legal and Sharia values among students. This study seeks to answer two questions: first, why do many students of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta still use ex-inter iPhones? Second, how does Islamic Legal Sociology view the use of ex-inter iPhones by these students? This type of research is a quantitative and qualitative mix method research, with a descriptive analytical research nature involving 102 respondents and 6 informants. The approach used is a juridical-sociological approach. The data consist of primary and secondary sources collected through interviews, questionnaires, and documentation, which are analyzed through data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing with verification. The results indicate that the use of ex-inter iPhones by students of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta is influenced by economic, social, lifestyle, and functional factors, with more affordable prices being the dominant consideration. Peer pressure and social media strengthen the perception of the iPhone as a symbol of status and modernity. From the perspective of Islamic Legal Sociology, structural factors influence behavior more than the internalization of legal values. The adaptation in the form of using ex-inter iPhones reflects the tension between cultural goals and limited legitimate means. Legal and ethical awareness in Islam is present at the cognitive level but has not been internalized as a behavioral guide, in line concept of internalization. The symbolic meaning of iPhones, continuously reproduced by social media, indicates that legality and legal norms lose their dominant position, being replaced by constructions of prestige and social image . Overall, the findings confirm that the use of ex-inter iPhones reflects weak internalization of Islamic legal values due to strong social-structural pressures and the dominance of symbolic meaning in student interactions.
