Abstract
The concepts of makkiyah-madaniyah and nasikh-mansukh in the tradition of Ulum al-Qur’an, which were originally intended as tools for understanding the dynamics of revelation, have in their development instead given rise to a legal paradigm that tends to be definitive, rigid, and textual. The dominance of the classical view, which positions the Madaniyah verses as abrogating the Makkiyah verses, has led to the universal message of the Qur’an often being understood solely in a contextual-historical manner that is, emphasizing a narrow attachment to history. Amidst the discourse on the renewal of Islamic thought, Mahmud Muhammad Taha presents a new interpretation of the Makkan-Madinan concept and its relationship with nasikh-mansukh to offer a more humanistic, historical-contextual (emphasizing history to uncover broader meanings), and relevant understanding of Islam in the context of modernity. This study examines how Mahmud Muhammad Taha constructs his thought regarding the makkiyah-madaniyah concept and its implications for nasikh-mansukh, as well as analyzes the forms of continuity and discontinuity in his thought within the classical tradition. This study employs a qualitative method using library research with a qualitative-descriptive-analytical approach. There are two main questions this study seeks to answer: how Mahmud Muhammad Taha’s concept of makkiyah-madaniyah is formulated, and what forms of continuity and discontinuity exist between his thought and the classical tradition. The results of this study indicate that Mahmud Muhammad Taha’s thought reconstructs the concept of naskh from the abrogation of laws toward the suspension and contextualization of legal application. First, the makkiyah verses are understood as a universal message containing the values of freedom, equality, justice, and humanity. Second, the Madaniyah verses are positioned as legal formulations of a temporary nature, tailored to the social conditions of 7th-century society. Third, Taha’s thought demonstrates continuity with the classical tradition as it continues to employ the tools of Ulum al-Qur’an such as the makkiyah-madaniyah distinction and the concept of naskh-mansukh; yet it simultaneously introduces discontinuity by overturning the classical legal paradigm, which has long been regarded as definitive. Thus, Taha’s thought represents a conceptual reinterpretation in Qur’anic studies that seeks to maintain the relevance of Islam’s universal values in addressing the challenges of modern society.
