Abstract
This study examines the influence of political literacy on first-time voters’ political preferences in the 2024 Indonesian presidential election, focusing on student executives of the Student Executive Council (DEMA) at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta (2025 term). Political literacy is conceptualized as an individual’s capacity to understand, internalize, and enact political awareness, operationalized through three dimensions: political knowledge, political efficacy/belief, and political behavior/action. Political preference is defined as an individual tendency to make political choices consciously and consistently, guided by substantive considerations such as candidates’ programs and track records. Employing a quantitative survey design and a census approach among DEMA officials, this research collected data through a structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 25, including validity and reliability tests, classical assumption tests, and simple linear regression. The results indicate a significant effect of political literacy on political preference. The R Square value of 0.445 suggests that political literacy explains 44.5% of the variance in political preference, while the remaining 55.5% is attributable to factors beyond the model. The regression coefficient is positive (b = 0.357), implying that higher political literacy is associated with stronger political preference. These findings highlight the importance of strengthening political literacy to improve the quality of political decision-making among first-time voters, particularly within politically engaged university students. Keywords: political literacy, political preference, first-time voters, 2024 presidential election, DEMA
