Abstract

Abstract. Student mental health has become an increasingly critical issue amid the growing use of digital media, particularly Doomscrolling behavior, which potentially deteriorates psychological wellbeing. This study aimed to examine the role of guilt feeling as a mediator in the relationship between Doomscrolling and mental health among university students. This study employed a quantitative approach with a mediation design. The subjects were active university students in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, recruited through online convenience sampling with a minimum sample of 384 respondents. Data were collected using three instruments: the Mental Health Inventory-38 (MHI-38) to measure mental health, the Guilt Feeling Scale developed based on Moral Emotion Theory, and the Doomscrolling Scale. Data analysis was conducted using medmod-based mediation testing. The results indicated that Doomscrolling had a significant direct effect on mental health (p = .013). However, guilt feeling did not significantly affect mental health (p = .580), indicating that guilt feeling did not function as a mediator in this relationship. The effect of Doomscrolling on mental health occurred directly without passing through the guilt feeling mechanism (direct-only model). These findings confirm that Doomscrolling is a relevant risk factor for students' mental health. Practically, these results may serve as a basis for higher education institutions to develop digital literacy programs that help students manage the consumption of negative information in a healthier manner.
