Abstract

This study aims to describe the form of family social support in improving the ability to access, communicate, understand information, and participate digitally based on the social functioning of the elderly in Padukuhan Anjir, Hargorejo, Kokap, Kulon Progo. The researcher's interest in researching the importance of social support in improving the ability to access, communicate, understand information, and participate digitally based on the elderly is because in the development of digital technology, the ability of the elderly to use mobile phones is still limited. These limitations have the potential to affect the social functioning of the elderly in daily life which can cause the elderly to be easily socially isolated. Therefore, family social support is needed by the elderly in increasing digital literacy. The novelty of this study lies in the location and focus of the study that places the family as the main actor to improve digital literacy as an effort to maintain the social functioning of the elderly, not only through formal training programs, communities, or certain institutions. This study uses a qualitative approach of case studies with semi-structured interview, observation, and documentation techniques. The informants consisted of three elderly people, three elderly families, Padukuhan Anjir hamlet, and two elderly cadres in Padukuhan Anjir. Data analysis used the Miles and Huberman model with data validity test through triangulation. The results of the study show that family social support in improving the ability to access, communicate, understand information, and participate in digital-based social participation has an impact on the social functioning of the elderly. The support is in the form of emotional support, award support, instrumental support, and informational support. In the process of increasing digital literacy, family social support is an important factor that is able to expand social networks, utilize social resources, improve the functioning of social roles, and social activities. With family social support, it is able to make it easier for the elderly to build social networks through digital communication.
