Abstract

This study examines the widespread practice of dehumanization targeting the transgender community, which arises from deeply entrenched social and cultural constructs within society. As a result, transgender individuals often find themselves marginalized and frequently subjected to negative stigma, violence, and the denial of their human rights. This studi aims to analyze various issues surrounding gender expression in Indonesia, identify the various forms of dehumanization experienced by the transgender community within social and religious contexts, and examine the role of prophetic communication in developing da’wah strategies at the Al Fatah Islamic boarding school for transgender people in Yogyakarta. This studi employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach and involves field research. Data collection techniques include semistructured interviews, observation, and documentation, while data analysis techniques consist of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions from the research. The results reveal that gender construction in Indonesia is binary and heteronormative, which often triggers dehumanization of the transgender community, such as subordination, marginalization, stereotyping, and violence in both social and religious spheres. In this context, the Al Fatah transgender Islamic boarding school plays a key role in providing an alternative space that offers a safe haven for the transgender community and serves as a place to restore their dignity as fully human beings. Prophetic communication has proven capable of serving as a humanistic and inclusive da’wah strategy through the application of its three main pillars: humanization, liberation, and transcendence. Therefore, prophetic communication plays a vital role in dismantling dehumanizing practices and restoring human dignity to the transgender community.
