Abstract

New students in modern Islamic boarding schools are vulnerable to experiencing difficulties in the adjustment process, particularly in dealing with dormitory regulations, structured daily routines, social relationships, as well as academic and religious demands. These conditions require adequate environmental support, one of which is the role of dormitory supervisors as companion figures. This study aims to understand how dormitory supervisors carry out their roles in assisting the adjustment process of new seventh-grade female students at SMP IT Daarul Hikmah Boarding School Bontang. This study employs a qualitative method with a case study approach to examine in depth the processes, roles, and dynamics of dormitory supervisors within the real-life setting of the boarding school environment. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation involving four active dormitory supervisors, namely NK, BQ, NJ, and KH. The number of informants was considered sufficient as data saturation had been achieved. The results show that dormitory supervisors perform their roles as facilitators, organizers, demonstrators, mentors, and motivators through emotional support, the creation of a supportive environment, modeling adaptive behavior, as well as guidance in social and academic aspects. In addition, supervisors also encounter emotional dynamics and various challenges in the mentoring process. The role of dormitory supervisors contributes to the development of students’ social maturity, intellectual ability, emotional maturity, and personal responsibility. These findings emphasize the importance of strengthening the dormitory supervision system to support the adjustment process of new students in modern Islamic boarding schools.
