Abstract

In Indonesia’s pluralistic society, cultural differences often serve as a trigger for conflict. The historical scars resulting from various ethnically motivated violent incidents that occurred in Indonesia’s past still linger among the Chinese community in Lasem. On the other hand, Lasem has become one of the regions capable of fostering harmony through intercultural communication between the Chinese community and the Javanese community a community deeply rooted in tradition within the pesantren environment using adaptive communication strategies. This study aims to examine how cultural adaptation in communication among the Chinese ethnic group in Lasem, Rembang Regency, occurs in the context of cultural differences. The findings of this study indicate that cultural adaptation among the Chinese ethnic group in Lasem is facilitated through the optimization of four factors: the use of the local language in daily life, active participation in various socio-cultural activities with the Lasem community, the strengthening of internal solidarity through Lasem community associations, and continuous support from various forums and local stakeholders. This study employs a qualitative, descriptive approach. The research subjects were the Chinese ethnic group in the Lasem Chinatown area. Data collection was conducted through interviews, nonparticipatory observation, and documentation, with data analysis involving unifying, categorizing, and interpreting the data. This study employs Young Yun Kim’s theoretical framework of cultural adaptation, which encompasses four dimensions: personal communication, host social communication, ethnic social communication, and environment; as well as Milton Bennett’s Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS), which outlines six stages of cultural sensitivity development. The result of this study is that although the Chinese ethnic group is known to have very strong ties to ancestral traditions, their adaptation in Lasem proceeds harmoniously through the integration of Young Yun Kim’s four mutually supportive dimensions.
