Abstract
A tahfidz boarding school is an Islamic educational institution that focuses on teaching the memorization of the Qur’ān while reinforcing the values contained within it through various religious traditions and practices. In many tahfidz boarding schools, Qur’ān-based practices are generally developed to support the process of memorization, maintain retention, and deepen students’ connection with the Qur’ān. However, the tradition that has developed at Ribath Al-Munawwar Ahluna Hamadatul Qur’ān Islamic Boarding School demonstrates a different orientation, namely the recitation of the Āyat Ḥirzi and Ḥafaẓah, which is not directly intended to reinforce memorization but rather as a practice believed to serve a function of spiritual protection and safeguarding. This phenomenon is worth examining from the perspective of the Living Qur’ān because it demonstrates a form of functional reception of the Qur’ān that is alive and evolving within the pesantren environment. This study aims to uncover the factors underlying the requirement for all students to recite the Āyat Ḥirzi and Ḥafaẓah, as well as to analyze the interpretations of both the teachers and students regarding these two practices from the perspective of the Living Qur’ān. This study employs a qualitative field research approach, utilizing data collection techniques such as observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The data obtained were analyzed using the theory of functional reception of the Qur’ān developed by Ahmad Rafiq. The results of the study indicate that the obligation to recite the Āyat Ḥirzi and Ḥafaẓah is underpinned by four main factors: scholarly legitimacy through the sanad and ijazah from KH. Mahrus Hasyim to Ning Khotmul Hamidiyah, which was subsequently compiled in the Majmu' Hamidiyah with reference to the book Mujarrobat ad -Dairobi, the characteristics of Ribath Al-Munawwar, which is dominated by non-resident students (kalong), the transformation of the function of the practice from physical protection to spiritual guardianship, and the need to nurture students outside the pesantren environment. The results of the study indicate that students interpret the verses of Ḥirzi and Ḥafaẓah in various ways, depending on their experiences and life contexts. These practices are understood as a means of spiritual protection, a source of inner peace, a reminder of their identity as santri, and a medium for maintaining a connection with pesantren traditions when outside the pesantren environment. These findings indicate that the tradition of reciting Āyat Ḥirzi and Ḥafaẓah constitutes a form of functional reception of the Qur’ān that is alive within the pesantren community. This tradition emerged from a combination of the credibility of the narrations underpinning its practice, the need to guide non-resident students, the transformation of the practice’s function from physical protection to spiritual safeguarding, and the interpretations constructed by the mentors and embraced by the students. Thus, the Qur’ān is not merely present as a text to be read and memorized, but is also actualized as a source of meaning and a guide in daily life.
