Abstract

This study aims to determine the role of librarians represented in the novel What you are looking for is in the library by Michiko Aoyama. This research is descriptive qualitative research using Roland Barthes semiotic analysis technique. Data collection methods used literature study, observation and documentation. The lack of public understanding and the negative impression attached to librarians and their role, such as being cold, unhelpful, and identical to women, are the reasons for the low public view. In fact, some librarians do not fully understand their duties and roles. These unfavourable representations are also often found in media such as films, television shows and literary works such as novels, which contribute to building the wrong impression. Therefore, it is necessary to change this to a more positive direction, one of which is through literary works, so that people have a greater understanding of librarians and their role in society. Based on the results of the research, 29 quotations related to the role of librarians in the novel What you are looking for is in the library by Michiko Aoyama were found. The representation of the librarian's role includes the librarian as an Information Transfer Agent, Knowledge Developer, Knowledge Producer, Agent of Change, Community Liaison, User Partner, Literacy Educator, Empowerment Agent. Thus, from this research, the role of librarians appears to have a wider and more complex impact on society. Through popular literary works such as novels, librarians can be shaped as influential figures in people's lives.
