Abstract

This study aims to examine the worldview of the author in the novel ‘Amāliqah asy-Syamāl through the Genetic Structuralism approach developed by Lucien Goldmann. The novel represents social, political, and religious conflicts within the context of the Nigeria-Biafra Civil War (1967–1970) and illustrates the dynamics of the marginalization of Muslims amid the dominance of power and colonialism. Using the dialectical method of understanding and explanation, this research analyzes the structure of the text, humanistic facts, collective subjects, and the worldview reflected in the novel. The findings reveal humanistic facts, including exploitation and neocolonialism, injustice and discrimination, military coups, and religion as a war propaganda tool. The collective subjects in this novel include the Muslim Hausa-Fulani, Christian missionaries, and the Igbo ethnic group along with the separatist movements. The worldview in this novel reflects Islamic values constructed through the social, ideological, and religious experiences of Najīb al-Kīlānī, including his involvement in the al-Ikhwān al-Muslimūn (IM) movement. These experiences significantly influence how al-Kīlānī constructs Islamic values as a response to structural injustices. The author’s worldview in this work not only reflects the socio-historical conditions of Nigeria but also serves as a mirror for the global struggle of Muslims against oppression and inequality. Thus, ‘Amāliqah asy-Syamāl is not only a historical literary work but also a means of ideological resistance and a narrative of justice from the Muslim perspective.
