Abstract

This study aims to analyze that women's oppression cannot be understood through one dimension, such as gender, but rather as the result of the complex interaction of various social identities, including skin color, age, beauty norms, and patriarchal power structures. Using the framework of Kimberlé Crenshaw's theory of intersectionality, this study uncovers the layered oppression experienced by Omani women, as seen in Mayya's case. Patriarchal norms, which set women's values based on physical appearance such as skin color and age, reinforce social hierarchies that create unique barriers. The combination of skin color bias, age, and gender expectations creates complex forms of oppression, which are often overlooked in singular studies of discrimination. The study also emphasizes how women lose agency in the context of patriarchal societies, by comparing the beauty hierarchy that forms the stratification among women, thus strengthening the patriarchal structure. Therefore, to address these inequalities, a comprehensive analytical approach and systemic change that encompasses the various dimensions of social discrimination, going beyond mere patriarchy. Keywords: Layered oppression, intersectionality, Omani women, novel sayyidāt al-qamar, Kimberlé Crenshaw.
