Abstract
This study was motivated by the importance of empowering persons with disabilities, which should not only focus on productive activities but also on fostering independence, capacity building, and the sustainability of skills. Bina Siwi Orphanage in Bantul implements an empowerment program by utilizing fabric scraps to produce traditional woven doormats and various sewn products. This study aims to analyze the implementation of the empowerment program through the utilization of fabric scraps, identify its potentials and challenges, and examine the outcomes and impacts of the program on persons with disabilities at Bina Siwi Orphanage, Bantul. This study employed a qualitative research method with a descriptive approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña interactive model, which consists of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the empowerment program was implemented through six stages: preparation, assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, and termination. The program was supported by several potentials, including the availability of fabric scrap materials, support from partners, the experience of caregivers, and the interest and participation of persons with disabilities. However, the program also encountered several challenges, such as a limited number of facilitators, inadequate facilities and infrastructure, suboptimal product marketing, and differences in the participants' abilities to follow the training process. The outcomes and impacts of the program include improved sewing and weaving skills, increased self-confidence, enhanced independence, and the production of economically valuable products that contribute to the income of both the orphanage and the participants with disabilities. This study concludes that empowering persons with disabilities through the utilization of fabric scraps has made a positive contribution to their capacity development and independence. Nevertheless, strengthening assistance, marketing strategies, and program sustainability is still needed to ensure that the empowerment program can be implemented more effectively.
