Abstract

This study is motivated by the importance of strengthening character education through the integration of local wisdom values and spirituality within Islamic boarding schools (pesantren). Serat Wedhatama, as a classical Javanese literary work, contains moral, spiritual, and philosophical teachings that are highly relevant to character development. Meanwhile, Bina Aksara Mulya Islamic Boarding School possesses a distinctive characteristic by integrating Javanese script learning, pesantren spiritual traditions, and the spiritual leadership of the kiai into its educational process. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. The research was conducted in two stages. The first stage involved textual analysis of Serat Wedhatama to identify the core values that became the focus of the study. The second stage consisted of field research at Bina Aksara Mulya Islamic Boarding School through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation to analyze the spiritual leadership strategies employed by the kiai in internalizing these values. The research participants included the kiai, administrators, and students (santri). The findings reveal that the principal values of Serat Wedhatama internalized at Bina Aksara Mulya Islamic Boarding School include Mingkarminkuring Angkara (self-restraint and avoidance of negative desires), Mikani Rasa (inner sensitivity and wisdom), Waspada Ing Semu (critical awareness toward superficiality and illusion), Ngelmu Kang Nyata (practical and meaningful knowledge), and Sembah Catur (the four stages of spiritual devotion). The internalization of these values is carried out through four major spiritual leadership strategies: habituation through Javanese script learning, spiritual mujahadah and riyadhah practices, actualization of knowledge within pesantren culture, and the empowerment and development of students’ potentials. The findings further indicate that Javanese script functions not merely as a medium of cultural literacy but also as a pedagogical and spiritual instrument for value internalization through the processes of ngerti (understanding), ngrasakke (internalizing and experiencing), and nglakoni (practicing). In addition, mujahadah and riyadhah cultivate inner awareness and spiritual sensitivity, while the actualization of knowledge and student empowerment serve as means for implementing values in everyday life. These internalization processes contribute to the formation of students’ character, reflected in religiosity, reflectiveness, discipline, independence, responsibility, adaptability, and social usefulness.
