Abstract

The Prasah tradition in Sidigede Village, Welahan District, Jepara Regency, Central Java, is one of the Javanese traditional wedding traditions that is still preserved to this day. This tradition involves the giving of gifts from the prospective groom to the prospective bride, which initially took the form of a buffalo. Over time, Prasah has become understood not only as a material gift, but also as a symbol of respect, responsibility, an expression of gratitude to the bride's family, and a hope for the well-being of the household. However, there are differing views within the community regarding the meaning and status of Prasah, whether as a dowry, a traditional gift, or a cultural heritage passed down through generations. This situation raises questions about the motives of the community's social actions in carrying out the Prasah tradition in Javanese traditional weddings. The research employed a field research method conducted through interviews, observations, and documentation. This study is descriptive-analytical in nature and adopts a sociological approach to examine the relationship between the community of Sidigede Village and the implementation of the Prasah tradition in marriage. The collected data were then analyzed qualitatively using an inductive method to understand the meaning of the tradition as well as the social motives underlying the community's efforts to preserve and maintain it. The results of the study indicate that the people of Sidigede Village interpret Prasah as a form of dowry or gift from the man to the woman which functions as a symbol of respect, responsibility, and sincerity in building a household. As time goes by, the form of Prasah is no longer limited to buffalo, but can be adjusted to the needs and capabilities of each family. This tradition is also not seen as a mandatory requirement that determines the validity of a marriage and is not accompanied by sanctions for people who do not carry it out. Based on Max Weber's theory of social action, the implementation of Prasah is motivated by traditional actions that stem from hereditary customs, value-oriented rational actions based on beliefs in cultural and social values, and instrumental rational actions that consider practical benefits in their implementation.
