Abstract

The celebration of Indonesia's Independence Day is deeply intertwined with nationalist symbolism. However, in practice, pseudo-nationalism often emerges, reducing independence to mere ceremonial displays rather than a commitment to justice, social progress, and societal harmony. This pseudo-nationalism manifests through symbolic rituals and formalistic observances that lack substantive engagement with national development. This issue is crucial in broader discussions on nationalism and social development, as it affects social cohesion and the realization of fundamental human rights. This study critically examines pseudo-nationalism in Indonesia’s independence celebrations through an Islamic lens, emphasizing principles of justice, welfare, and humanity. Using a critical analysis approach, it reviews literature on Islam, nationalist theories, and Indonesian nationalist practices to explore how Islamic perspectives can address the shortcomings of pseudo-nationalism. Preliminary findings suggest that these celebrations often prioritize performative aspects over meaningful reflection on national values. Therefore, a deeper reinterpretation of Independence Day is necessary to align it with principles that foster genuine social progress, justice, and collective welfare.
