Abstract

The tradition of releasing a chicken when a bridal procession passes through the Palbapang intersection is a traditional practice that has been preserved for generations by the local community. This tradition is carried out by newlywed couples passing through the Palbapang intersection, which the community believes will bring them safety. This thesis is the result of research aimed at answering the following questions: what are the views of Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah figures in Bantul Regency regarding the tradition of releasing a chicken when a bridal procession passes through the Palbapang intersection? And what is the analysis of the similarities, differences, and relevance of the views of Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah figures in Bantul Regency regarding this tradition? This study aims to describe and analyze the views of Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah figures in Bantul Regency regarding the tradition of releasing a chicken when a bridal procession passes through the Palbapang intersection. This study uses a qualitative approach with interview methods conducted with figures from both Islamic organizations, alongside a related literature review. This study utilizes the theory of 'urf as the approach and analytical tool. The results show that the tradition of releasing a chicken when a bridal procession passes through the Palbapang intersection is a long-standing custom preserved for generations. In its implementation, there are no taboos or consequences for couples who do not release a chicken when passing through the Palbapang intersection, as this tradition is simply a form of respecting, following, and continuing existing customs. There are differing views between the two organizations. According to Nahdlatul Ulama figures, the tradition is permissible as long as it is intended as almsgiving (sedekah) and to avoid ill wishes. The view of Nahdlatul Ulama figures leans toward 'urf shahih because it is considered not to contradict Islamic teachings, contains benefits, and does not cause harm. Conversely, according to Muhammadiyah figures, the tradition should not be practiced due to fears of deviating from tawhid (the oneness of God), specifically the intention of seeking safety from sources other than Allah SWT, no matter how small that intention may be. The view of Muhammadiyah figures leans toward 'urf fasid because it involves a belief in seeking safety from other than Allah SWT. Consequently, Muhammadiyah figures emphasize caution in dealing with such traditions.
