Abstract

Persons with disabilities continue to face structural barriers in social and economic life, particularly limited employment opportunities, inaccessible transportation, social stigma, and economic dependence on their families or external assistance. Difa Bike was established as an innovation in transportation and service provision that offers inclusive services while creating employment opportunities for persons with disabilities as driver s. This study aims to describe and analyze Difa Bike’s transportation and service innovations and its strategies for fostering the economic independence of persons with disabilities. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through non-participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The data were validated through source and methodological triangulation and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. Informants were selected through purposive sampling and included Difa Bike managers, driver s with disabilities, service users, and members of the public familiar with Difa Bike. The findings indicate that Difa Bike has developed adaptive three-wheeled vehicles and diversified its services through DifaRide, DifaBox, and DifaTour. Its economic independence strategies are implemented through enabling, empowering, and protecting measures, including access to employment, vehicle provision, skills training, mentoring, a revenue-sharing system, insurance, basic-needs assistance, and expanded partnerships. These strategies have enabled driver s to meet their daily needs, support their families, manage their income, purchase their own vehicles, develop greater self-confidence, and gain social recognition. However, their economic independence remains unstable due to declining orders and increasing competition from app-based transportation services. Based on the findings, Difa Bike serves not only as an inclusive transportation innovation but also as an empowerment platform that gradually promotes the economic independence of persons with disabilities.
