Abstract

Children living with HIV (CLHIV) face not only health issues, but also require continuosu support in undergoing treatment and navigating psychosocial conditions. Peer support serves as a form of assistance that leverages shared experiences between supporters and beneficiaries. Yayasan Victory Plus Yogyakarta is one of the organizations providing peer support for CLHIV. This study aims to describe and analyze the practices of peer support for CLHIV at the Yayasan Victory Plus Yogyakarta. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through in-depth interviews with seven informants, comprising five peer support, one coordinator, and one leader of the Yayasan Victory Plus Yogyakarta. The results indicate that peer alignment is based a shared HIV status and lived experience as people living with HIV, rather than age similarity. Peer support are recruited through open recruitment and institutional selections, and are subsequently equipped through learning by doing, internal training, and capacity building. The scope of peer support includes emotional support, HIV information and education, ARV adherence, caregiver support, disclosure assistance, defining role boundaries, and referral mechanisms. On the other hand, the implementation of peer support still faces limitations regarding the number of supporters, funding, caregiver conditions, and access to health care services.
