Abstract

This study aims to describe students' perceptions of bullying at SMP Negeri 3 Simpenan in Sukabumi Regency, West Java, as well as identify the factors that influence the formation of this perception. The study was driven by students' tendency to interpret verbal and relational bullying as a normal form of joke in everyday interactions, which can hinder efforts to prevent bullying in the school setting. A qualitative case study approach was used for this study. The main informants consisted of five eighth-graders selected through targeted sampling based on recommendations from the Deputy Principal for Student Affairs, supported by informants from teachers and school staff. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, non-participant observations, and document studies, and then analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion making. The findings show that most students view bullying narrowly, viewing it only as physical violence, thus considering verbal and relational bullying such as mocking parents' names, physical insults, and social exclusion as common. Students' interpretations of bullying vary depending on their role as perpetrators, victims, or witnesses. Factors that affect students' perceptions include personal experiences, peer influence, joke culture at school, socio-cultural habits of their family environment, and the ineffectiveness of anti-bullying education programs, such as the Proyek Penguatan Profil Pelajar Pancasila (P5) and the limited function of Guidance and Counseling. This research is expected to enrich the field of Social Welfare Studies related to adolescents' social perceptions and provide input for schools in designing an experience-based bullying prevention program that reflects students' interpretations.
