Abstract

Income inequality remains one of the major challenges in the process of economic development, including in G20 countries. High economic growth is not always accompanied by improved income distribution due to the influence of various economic factors and institutional aspects. This study aims to analyze the effects of unemployment, Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), and poverty on income inequality, as well as to examine the role of government governance as a moderating variable in G20 countries during the period 2010–2023. This study employs a quantitative approach using an explanatory research method. The data consist of panel data from G20 member countries obtained from the World Bank, particularly the World Development Indicators (WDI) and Worldwide Governance Indicators (WGI). The data were analyzed using panel data regression. The results show that economic growth (GDP), FDI, and poverty have a positive and significant effect on income inequality in G20 countries, while economic growth (GDP²) has a negative and significant effect. Meanwhile, unemployment and Control of Corruption have no significant effect on income inequality. The insignificant effects of unemployment and Control of Corruption indicate that improvements in corruption control do not directly guarantee a more equitable distribution of income, as they remain influenced by the effectiveness of redistribution policies and the institutional characteristics of each country.
