Abstract
This study examines the representation of misogyny in the Netflix series Adolescence (2025) using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory (denotation, connotation, myth) combined with mise-en-scène analysis. This descriptive qualitative study examined nine scenes across four episodes. Scene selection was assisted by two coders to minimize researcher subjectivity: from an initial pool of 11 scenes with gendered content, the researcher and coders screened scenes using Brogaard's (2020) categorization indicators and eliminated repetitive scenes or scenes on which the coders disagreed, resulting in 9 primary scenes. At the level of myth, findings were strengthened through theory triangulation, reading each finding across more than one theoretical framework: Brogaard's (2020) hate-based and contempt-based misogyny typology as the primary framework, compared against and enriched by Kate Manne's structural theory of misogyny, Connell's concept of hegemonic masculinity, and relational frameworks from Gavey and Stark where relevant. The findings show that misogyny in Adolescence is not represented as explicit individual hatred, but as a layered ideological system naturalized through visual and narrative codes, positioning women as subordinate, as status instruments, or as sources of emotional validation. Of the nine scenes, seven were categorized as contempt-based and two as hate-based misogyny.
