Abstract

This study examines the practice of weton calculation as a means of determining marital compatibility, which is still practiced in Sidapurna Village, Dukuhturi Subdistrict, Tegal Regency. Weton is a Javanese tradition that assesses the compatibility of prospective spouses based on the neptu values of their respective birth days and market days; in Sidapurna Village, there is a unique variation known as the “jeblog” concept, which also takes into account the birth days of both prospective in-laws. This study aims to describe the practice of weton calculation and to understand the community’s views on this tradition. This study is a field research project employing a sociological approach and a descriptive-analytical methodology. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and documentation from seven informants selected via purposive sampling, including the village head, community leaders, religious leaders, traditional leaders, and couples who had previously undergone the weton practice. The data were analyzed deductively using Max Weber’s theory of social action. The research findings indicate that the tradition of weton calculations is still upheld by the residents of Sidapurna Village as one of the factors considered in determining a couple’s compatibility before marriage. Based on the research findings, the community’s views on this tradition fall into four categories: weton as an ancestral legacy; as a precaution to avoid undesirable outcomes; as an additional consideration following religion and moral character; and as a tradition that continues to be practiced due to environmental influences. An analysis using Max Weber’s Theory of Social Action shows that the practice of weton calculation is dominated by traditional and affective actions, although value-oriented rational actions and instrumental rational actions were also found among some informants. These findings indicate that the practice of weton calculation is influenced not only by traditions passed down through generations but also by beliefs, values, and evolving social conditions within the community.
