Abstract

This study examines the learning strategies employed by Islamic Religious Education (PAI) teachers in developing the spiritual intelligence of students at SMA Muhammadiyah 4 Yogyakarta. The focus of this research is to explore the learning strategies used by PAI teachers to foster students’ spiritual intelligence and to identify the outcomes of implementing these strategies. In addition, this study investigates the challenges faced by PAI teachers in developing students’ spiritual intelligence, including both internal and external factors influencing learners. This research employed a qualitative approach using a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, indirect interviews using Google Form questionnaires, non-participant observations, and documentation involving PAI teachers and students. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of data collection, data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing or verification based on the analytical model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. To ensure data validity, this study applied credibility testing through source triangulation, technique triangulation, and time triangulation. The findings reveal that first, PAI teachers implement several learning strategies to develop students’ spiritual intelligence, namely expository, problem-based, cooperative, and contextual learning strategies. These strategies are carried out by integrating Islamic values, religious habituation, group discussions, problem-solving activities, and the connection of learning materials to students’ daily lives. Second, the implementation of these learning strategies contributes to the development of students’ spiritual intelligence, as reflected in increased awareness of worship practices, deeper understanding and application of Islamic values, the growth of exemplary character and social concern, and the establishment of a religious culture within the school environment. Meanwhile third, the problems faced by Islamic Religious Education teachers include students’ low literacy interest, lack of learning motivation among some students, the influence of technology and gadgets, peer group influences, and insufficient support from the family environment.
