Abstract

The learning of Qur’an memorization (Taḥfiẓ Al- Qur’an) is influenced not only by pedagogical aspects but also by neurophysiological mechanisms and psychological conditions that affect memorization performance. Although various studies have examined Taḥfiẓ from educational and psychological perspectives, a significant research gap remains, namely the lack of empirical studies that comprehensively integrate brainwave activity, stress levels, mental health, and memorization performance within a unified analytical framework. This limitation has resulted in an incomplete understanding of the internal mechanisms underlying successful or declining memorization performance. Therefore, this study was conducted to address this gap through a more holistic approach grounded in neurocognitive and psychological data. This study aims to: (1) describe the brainwave profiles of Qur’an memorizers during resting conditions and during the murāja‘ah (revision/review of memorization) process; (2) describe the stress levels, mental health, and memorization performance of Qur’an memorizers; (3) analyze the relationships among brain waves, stress levels, mental health, and Qur’anic memorization performance; (4) describe the experiences of Qur’an memorizers in managing stress and maintaining mental health during the taḥfiẓ process; and (5) formulate theoretical implications and principles of taḥfiẓ al- Qur’an learning based on the integration of the research findings. This study employed a mixed-methods approach using a concurrent triangulation design. The study involved 91 students (santri) at Pondok Pesantren Taḥfiẓ al-Qur’an Muhammadiyah Ibnu Juraimi. Quantitative data were collected using the NeuroSky MindWave device, a stress scale, a mental health scale, and Taḥfiẓ report-card scores. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression. Qualitative data were obtained through observation and interviews and were analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña model, then integrated at the interpretation stage. Data validity was ensured through instrument validity and reliability testing, standardized EEG measurement procedures, and source triangulation. The findings indicate that the murāja‘ah process is characterized by changes in brain-wave activity profiles, particularly in the theta, alpha, beta, and gamma bands. Beta and gamma waves show significant positive relationships with Qur’anic memorization performance (r = 0.731; p = 0.040 for beta, and r = 0.946; p = 0.000 for gamma). Stress levels show a significant negative relationship with memorization performance (r = −0.796; p = 0.000), whereas mental health shows a significant positive relationship with memorization performance (r = 0.584; p = 0.000). Multiple linear regression results indicate that these three variables simultaneously contribute significantly to memorization performance (R² = 0.771; F = 97.372; p = 0.000). Qualitative findings reveal that students employ emotional, spiritual, and physiological strategies to manage stress and maintain mental health. The integration of all findings produces a conceptual model of neuropsychospiritual Taḥfiẓ learning based on cognitive neuroscience. These findings also provide an empirical basis for repositioning Qur’anic memorization activities within the perspective of Bloom’s Taxonomy, from being predominantly viewed as a remembering activity (Lower Order Thinking Skills/LOTS) to being understood as an activity involving attention, self-regulation, information processing, memory reinforcement, and higher-level cognitive integration (Higher Order Thinking Skills/HOTS).
