Abstract

Technological development has led to increasing energy consumption and CO2 emissions, which trigger global warming. One solution to this problem is absorbing CO2 through photosynthesis mechanism of vegetation. Riparian vegetation has high potential for carbon absorption and storage. This research aimed to study the structure, carbon absorption, and storage of riparian vegetation. The study was conducted at Boyong River from February - March 2026. Location selection was carried out purposively in open and closed canopy areas. Vegetation data were collected using square belt plots, CO2 emissions estimated with traffic counts, and carbon storage estimated with allometric. Data were analyzed to obtain IVI, H’, and E indices, and the correlations among variables using CCA.The results show that closed areas are dominated by Cocos nucifera and Leucaena leucocephala, whereas open areas are dominated by Swietenia macrophylla and Inocarpus fagifer. Transportation emissions were higher on weekends then weekdays. The percentage of CO2 absorption in closed areas (21.65% and 27.95%) was higher than in open areas (2.01% and 16.12%). Carbon storage in trees was greater in closed areas, while herbaceous carbon storage was greater in open areas. The CCA analysis indicated that closed areas are associated with the stability of tree and seedling communities, higher tree carbon storage, and lower temperatures. Meanwhile, open areas are associated with sapling community stability, light intensity, and higher temperatures. In conclusion, closed areas have greater support for carbon absorption and storage then open areas.
