Abstract

The phenomenon of unequal roles and gender inequality within the family between women and men, gives rise to gender-biased behavior. Gender bias, which is deeply rooted in social structures, is also a topic covered in the media, including films. This study of the film How to Make a Million Before Grandma Dies, aims to examine how gender bias manifests in the family dynamics of the film’s characters. To achieve this objective, the researcher employs Sandra Harding’s Standpoint Theory, which encompasses three key concepts: 1) Standpoint (perspective) of Sew and Amah as women in a patriarchal family that positions men higher than women; 2) Situated Knowledge of Sew and Amah regarding the injustices they face from their families; and 3) Sexual Division of Labor, which assigns all domestic work to Sew and Amah, thereby preventing men from becoming accustomed to performing domestic tasks. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach and Roland Barthes’s semiotic analysis based on denotative signs, connotative signs, and myths. The results of the study indicate that gender bias is present in the film and is manifested through role inequality and gender injustice between women and men within the family. Based on this study, it can be concluded that, from the perspectives of Sew and Amah, women are positioned as inferior to men and consistently experience injustice within the family structure.
